Minister Dipu Moni on Saturday claimed that the BNP-led 18-party
alliance called a hartal for January 6 to foil the government's
celebration on the occasion of its fourth year.“It cannot be a part of a positive politics,” Dipu Moni told journalists while distributing blankets among poor freedom fighters and fishermen at Chandpur Circuit House, reports our district correspondent.
She said, “Hartal is a democratic right but it is being misused."
The foreign minister also claimed that people rejected the anarchic activities of the opposition that they have been creating in the name of hartal. "Now, it is meaningless to call a hartal when the country is stepping forward," she said.
In Bangladesh, fuel price is less than any other neighbouring countries and the government has been providing huge subsidy for this sector, Dipu Moni added.
Knowing the fact that increasing the fuel price was necessary, the opposition has called the hartal only to make people confused, she added.
The government on Thursday increased prices of diesel and kerosene by Tk 7 a litre, and octane and petrol by Tk 5 a litre to reduce its subsidy burden.
The 18-party alliance has called the nationwide dawn-to-dusk hartal protesting the fuel price hike that became effective on Friday.
