People
will not accept if the government tries only some 'identified'
opposition leaders in connection with crimes against humanity aiming to
implement agenda of a specific party, BNP coordinator Tariqul Islam said
on Tuesday. “There will be no national solidarity if only some identified opposition leaders are tried,” Tariqul, also a BNP standing committee member, said while addressing a discussion in the city.
Jatiyatabadi Mahila Dal organised the meeting at the auditorium of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh to mark the 77th birth anniversary of late president Ziaur Rahman, also founder of BNP.
“Crimes against humanity took place during our Liberation War in 1971 and we support trying them who committed war crimes at that time," said the BNP leader.
"But such crimes also took place during the post-liberation war period. Even, at present crimes against humanity are also taking place."
"I will therefore ask the government let us all come forward and try all those crimes against humanity impartially and transparently to get rid of sins,” added Tariqul.
He criticised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for awarding a police member who was allegedly involved in manhandling Opposition Chief Whip Zainul Abdin Farroque last year.
Tariqul criticised: “What an irony that the police officer who had manhandled our opposition chief whip was awarded president’s medal (during “Police Week”). On the other hand, the premier was saying they don’t want to use police force as a political weapon.”
