Police use pepper spray, water canon in capital; hartal peaceful in other parts, daylong in Thakurgaon
Police
resist pro-hartal activists when trying to stop a passenger bus during
hartal hours in front of the Birdem Hospital at Shahbagh intersection in
the capital.
Some stray incidents marked the countrywide six-hour hartal in the capital on Wednesday.The untoward incidents include processions of pro-hartal activists, chase and counter-chase between law enforcers and hartal supporters and use of pepper spray and water canon by police.
The shutdown was however peaceful in other parts of the country.
In Thakurgaon, a dawn-to-dusk hartal is progressing demanding immediate release of BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam since 6:00am. Juba Dal and Chhatra Dal unit of Thakurgaon enforced the hartal, reports our Thakurgaon correspondent.
Several leftist parties on January 9 called the countrywide shutdown protesting the recent hike in electricity and fuel prices.
The incidents of chase and counter-chase took place between police and pro-hartal activists in Paltan and Shahbagh areas of the capital around 6:45am, reports our correspondent covering the event.
Several hartal supporters got hurt in their eyes as police used pepper spray to disperse the pro-hartal activists.
Police also hurled several teargas shells during the incident.
Hartal supporters also brought out sporadic processions in support of hartal in Paltan area around 10:00am.
Police charged batons and used pepper spray to disperse them while they were trying to block Shahabagh intersection around 10:30am.
