Don't harass Fakhrul: HC

The High Court on Sunday directed the government 'not to harass or arrest' BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir "without the due process of law" for the next two months.
In response to a writ petition, the court also issued a rule upon the government to explain in two weeks why it should not be directed not to implicate Fakhrul, now in jail, in any more case "without the due process of law".

The court fixed February 14 for hearing the rule.
Earlier on January 20, the BNP leader filed the writ petition with the HC.
Immediately after Fakhrul had secured bail from the HC in two cases, the government showed him arrested in two fresh cases though he had no involvement in the offences mentioned and his name was not on the list of the accused, his lawyer Zainul Abedin had said.
It was a violation of the law and the constitution, he earlier noted.
Fakhrul said in the petition that the fresh charges brought against him were intended to harass him politically.
On January 16, the BNP leader was implicated in two cases, raising the number of cases against him to 22 in less than nine months. He was not made accused when these two cases were filed with Kalabagan and Paltan police stations in the capital in connection with last year's December 9 roadblock enforced by the 18-party opposition.
The same way he was earlier implicated in 16 more cases filed with different police stations in Dhaka on charges of violence during the blockade.
Until now, Fakhrul has been made accused in 20 of the 38 cases filed against hundreds of opposition men in connection with arson, vandalism and rampage during the roadblock.
He has been facing two more cases on charges of torching a vehicle in front of the Prime Minister's Office and throwing cocktails inside the secretariat during a hartal called by the BNP-led opposition on April 29 last year.
Following the hartal, Fakhrul was arrested and about a month after his arrest he was released on bail by the HC.
He was then arrested again on December 10 last year in two cases filed for the destruction of a city corporation garbage truck in Nayapaltan and for cocktail blasts on Indira Road of Rajabazar area during the roadblock.
