Police disperse demonstrating teachers

In this January 9 photo, teachers of non-MPO educational institutions stage demonstrations in front of the police barricade set up in between the press club and secretariat demanding their schools included in the monthly pay order.
Police fired teargas shells to disperse the non-MPO teachers and employees, who started a fast-unto-death in front of the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital on Thursday.
Around 300 teachers and employees began the fast-unto-death programme in front of the Shaheed Minar around the midday to press home their demand for inclusion of their educational institutions in the Monthly Payment Order (MPO) system.
On Wednesday, the teachers and employees under the banner of Non-MPO Shikkha Pratishthan Shikkhak Karmachari Oikya Jote declared to hold the programme in front of Jatiya Press Club.
But the law enforcers obstructed the demonstrators around 9:00am Thursday when they started to gather in front of the press club to hold their fast-unto-death programme, Esharat Ali, president of the forum, claimed.
Following the police resistance, they decided to hold the programme at the Central Shaheed Minar instead of the press club, he added.
Around 1:30pm, the law enforcers rushed the Shaheed Minar and asked the protestors to leave the place.
Asked Sirajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station, said police requested the teachers to leave the place as per the instruction from higher authorities.
As the jote activists did not pay heed to the law enforcers, police lobbed tear gas shells and drove them out of the Shaheed Minar premises.
Esharat Ali said, “We will continue our movement until the government reacts positively to us."
