Party Chairman HM Ershad on Saturday alleged that the government was
"trying to protect" killers of Bishwajit Das who was murdered brutally
by a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League cadres during an opposition
blockade on December 9 last year. The former president, also a key leader in the ruling Awami League-led grand alliance government, demanded trial of the killers in a speedy trial tribunal and their exemplary punishment.
“Country’s 16 crore people have watched [on television and read newspaper reports] how a section of ruling student wing’s activists brutally chopped and hacked him to death with machetes and knifes. But there was no mention of such attack in the autopsy report [of Bishwajit],” Ershad said after placing a floral wreath in front of Bahdurshah Park in Old Dhaka where Bishwajit was murdered.
Addressing a gathering at that place, Ershad said the government was trying to divert Bishwajit murder case to save real killers of the poor tailor boy.
He also demanded that the government observe December 9 as ‘Shaheed Bishwajit Day’ and build a monument after him where Bishwajit was murdered.
Bishwajit, a tailor boy by profession was swooped to kill by a group of BCL cadres of Jagannath University during BNP-led opposition blockade on December 9.
The anti-blockade activist of BCL took Bishwajit as a pro-blockade supporter.
Law enforcers so far arrested 11 persons in this connection. Of them, four BCL activists of JnU gave confessional statements before the metropolitan magistrates. Three others were remaining in police remand. And the rest four widely believed as innocent remained in jail.
Before placing the wreath, the Jatiya Party boss visited the Bishwajit's family at Hrisikesh Das lane in Old Dhaka.
Ershad consoled Bishwajit’s parents and gave a cheque of Tk 50,000 to them.
Earlier on January 3, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia visited Bishwajit's residence and gave Tk 2 lakh to the family members.
