Plea seeks pepper spray use stop

Hearing on the petition likely today

This recent photo shows policemen use pepper spray on non-MPO teachers and employees at Central Shaheed Minar in the capital.
A Supreme Court lawyer on Sunday filed a writ petition with the High Court seeking its directive on the government to stop use of pepper spray on demonstrating people.
Advocate Eunus Ali Akand filed the petition praying to the court to issue a rule upon the government to explain why the use of pepper spray on people during any type of demonstration should not be declared illegal.
Home secretary, inspector general of police and commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police have been made respondent to the petition.
In the petition, Eunus said that as per the constitution, law enforcers have no rights to resort to any types of cruel behaviour towards the people and all the people have the democratic right to hold meeting and gathering.
The petition also said the law enforcers recently used pepper spray on non-MPO teachers during their agitation programme and on pro-hartal activists demonstrating during hartal hours in separate incidents in the capital which were illegal and violation of constitution, petition said.
After filing the petition, Eunus told The Daily Star that the hearing on the petition may be held later in the day.
He filed the petition on the basis of reports published on different newspapers on 'the law enforcers using pepper spray on demonstrating people', he added.
