Amid
apprehension by both the ruling and opposition parties that another
1/11 may revisit over the next general election, noted jurist Barrister
Rafique-ul Huq on Saturday ruled out such possibility, saying that the
present perspective is quite different than that of 2007.“Some people are saying that 1/11 may return. But, I want to say it won’t happen… the 1/11 emerged last time in a different state of affairs. Now the situation has changed a lot and people are now very cautious,” he told a programme in which he was the lone speaker.
Mukta Chinta Forum, a rights platform, arranged the programme at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity in the capital.
Former attorney general during Ershad’s military rule, Huq also thinks that ‘minus-two formula’ was a futile notion and such formula will not work in the future, too.
“There was an attempt to implement the minus-two formula. But now it’s over. Thinking of implementing such notion has turned into a nightmare. The minus-two formula can’t take place further. Now it can be three by adding another one instead of minus two,” he told his audience.
Earlier, in her address to the nation on Friday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that the much-talked-about ‘minus-two’ formula advocated by a vested quarter during the army-backed caretaker government is still alive.
On the same day, bashing the Prime Minister for her remarks that the opposition is inviting a 1/11-like situation, BNP spokesman Tariqul Islam alleged the government is conspiring to bring another 1/11 in the country.
He made the remarks while inaugurating a black-flag procession in front of BNP’s Nayapaltan central office brought out by his party-led 18-parrty alliance to observe ‘Black Day on Friday to register its protest against the 2007 political changeover and formation of a military-backed interim government on the day.
