Opposition’s 'principal job' saving war criminals: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addresses a views-exchange meeting at her official residence Gono Bhaban in the capital on Saturday.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday said that saving the war criminals of 1971 and establishing them in society has been adopted by the BNP-led opposition alliance as its principal job.
“They (opposition) want to stop the trial of the war criminals, they want to establish the war criminals in the society and this is the principal job of the opposition,” she said addressing a views-exchange meeting with lawyers from different corners of the country at her official residence Gono Bhaban.
She urged all including the lawyers to remain aware and vigilant against the evil designs of the opposition party.
“We have to remain united against the evil design,” she said, adding that the trial of the war criminals was an election pledge of her party.
She also traced the rise of such “anti-liberation forces” to the post-1975 changeover, which allowed them to usurp state power and earn a lot of money. “That money is now being used to appoint lobbyists abroad to foil the trial of the war criminals,” she alleged.
Regarding the opposition’s demand of restoring the caretaker government, she warned that a revived caretaker government might cause trouble like the previous one for the country and its people.
“The opposition leader has gone mad demanding the caretaker government, but how is she so sure that the next caretaker government will not cause her trouble like the last one?” the prime minister questioned.
In this connection, she mentioned that the last army-backed caretaker government overstayed its welcome at the helm of the nation, since it was supposed to hold an election within three months.
“They put me and the opposition leader in jail, and this will happen again if the caretaker government came to power again,” she said.
The prime minister categorically stated that a caretaker government was not necessary to hold a free, fair, neutral and acceptable election to all, pointing out that in the last four years, the government had held numerous different kinds of elections in the country. “No one raised any question regarding these elections,” she said.
She said that the democratic process of the country has to be continued for the welfare of the country and its people, and the government had amended the constitution to secure democracy.
Describing various development activities of the government in the last four years, she said that the government strengthened the three pillars of the state to make sure that the people of the country get the best services from these three pillars.
“That is our prime aim and we are working on that tirelessly,” she said adding that the government is working accountably and transparently.
Regarding the Hall-Mark and Destiny affairs, she said it was the government that pointed out the irregularities. “But now it seems that by unearthing these matters we became the thieves,’ she regretted.
About the recent debacle of the Awami League-backed lawyers in the Bangladesh Bar Council election, she pointed to a lack of coordination among the AL-backed lawyers as the main reason. She requested the lawyers to forget all painful incidents and work together in the future to secure good results in the upcoming elections.
“When the pro-AL lawyers announce several panels, naturally the voters will be confused. I will request you to put up a united panel in the next Bar elections across the country,” she said.
She requested the lawyers to stay beside the poor and innocent people who are in custody and extend their hands to help them.
“Ensure that there will be no innocent and poor people in jail without any legal support from you,” she said.
Presided over by Abdul Matin Khasru, the views-exchange meeting was addressed among others by Mamtaj Uddin Mehedi, Abdul Malek, Aslamul Huq Sarker, Azadur Rahman, Rezaul Karim Montu, Kanai Lal Biswas, Nazibullah Hiru, Ashoke Kumar Saha, M Zahid Anwar and SM Mujibur Rahman.
All pro-AL lawyers’ leaders discussed their recent failures in the Bangladesh Bar Council election and emphasised the need for a united effort in the next elections.
Barrister Amirul islam, Telecommunication Minister Advocate Sahara Khatun, State Minister for Law Advocate Kamrul Islam, Advocate Rezaur Rahman, Advocate Shaiduzzaman Hasan and State Minister for Women and Child Affairs Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury were present on the dais with the Prime Minister.
