18-party forms human wall in city

Khaleda to visit the programme

The BNP-led 18-party opposition formed a human wall in the capital on Tuesday protesting the killing of Bishwajit Das and "forced disappearances" of its leaders and activists.
Hundreds of leaders and activists of the alliance led by BNP senior leaders formed the human wall from Mohakhali to Victoria Park in Old Dhaka at 11:00am.
Meanwhile, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will visit some key points of the human wall like Tejgaon, Satrasta intersection and High Court area on her way to a lower court, BNP sources said.
The programme will continue until the party chairperson reaches the court to appear before it in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case, the sources said.
Khaleda started for the court from her Gulshan residence and crossed Mohakhali intersection around 12:45pm, said Maruf Kamal Khan, BNP chairperson's press secretary, told The Daily Star
Khondoker Mosharraf Hossain, a standing committee member of BNP who attended the programme at Satrasta intersection, said if the government does not meterialise opposition's demand for restoration of the caretaker government system, they will be bound to come up with harsh.
The people of the country will force the government to meet the demand through a mass upsurge, he said.
The opposition leaders and activists were holding banners and placards during the programme demanding withdrawal of false cases filed against BNP Senior Vice-chairman Tarique Rahman and to end conspiracies against him.
BNP leader Moudud Ahmed joined the programme in High Court area while two other standing committee members -- MK Anwar and Abdul Moyeen Khan -- at Moghbazar and FDC intersections respectively.
As part of the programme, the 18-party will also form human walls in all district headquarters demanding the same.
The Jamaat-e-Islami, one of the key partners in the alliance, however, looked at this programme as an opportunity to press home its sole demand for the release of its top leaders facing war crimes trial, sources in the opposition told The Daily Star.
More than three weeks after Bishwajit was killed by some ruling party activists, the 18-party alliance on December 31 last year declared the protest programme human walls programme.
The poor tailor was mistaken for a blockader and attacked with machete and iron rods at Victoria Park in Old Dhaka by activists of pro-AL student body Chhatra League during opposition-enforced roadblock on December 9.
BNP's executive committee member Chowdhury Alam went missing in January 2010 while its organising secretary M Elias Ali along with his driver Ansar disappeared from Banani in Dhaka in April, last year.
Their whereabouts are still unknown. BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on several occasions alleged that government agencies were behind these disappearances.
