Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) and
Gonotantrik Bam Morcha on Wednesday called a nationwide six-hour hartal
for January 16 protesting power and fuel price hike.Gonotantrik Bam Morcha called the hartal from a press briefing at its Topkhana Road Office.
Later, CPB and BSD formally made the announcement while staging a sit-in in front of Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission in the capital.
Leaders of the two left-leaning parties started the programme around 11:30am, which were continuing till 1:15pm when the report was filed.
"Fuel prices are being raised repeatedly only to favour the government-patronised companies," Junaid Saki, coordinator of Gonotantrik Bam Morcha, said while addressing the press briefing.
Ruhin Hossain Prince, a central leader of the CPB who attended the sit-in, told The Daily Star that they would continue protest programmes until the government reduces the prices of fuel and power.
The government on Thursday increased prices of diesel and kerosene by Tk 7 a litre, and octane and petrol by Tk 5 a litre to reduce subsidy burden.
The Awami League-led government has so far increased fuel prices five times, including the latest one, since it came to power in December 2008.
Protesting the fuel price hike, the BNP-led 18-party alliance observed a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal on January 6.
