Wasa officials are frantically trying to repair a main supply water pipe
which burst open on Tuesday afternoon spilling millions of gallons of
water into the adjacent lake at Russell Square in Dhanmondi and
disrupting water supply in Kalabagan and other areas. The officials of Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) were present at the site where laborers were trying to locate the underground pipe since this morning, said that the18-inch main pipeline, running from Syedabad and a part of the city’s water supply network, burst due to pressure.
Anwar Hossain, Wasa’s Pipe Line Inspector (PLI) from Lalmatia office, overseeing the job said that the pipe was installed in the mid-eighties and it has become vulnerable.
“We can’t say when this can be restored because you can see, it looks like a major rupture,” Anwar said, as huge volume of water gushed out of the opening.
When asked if there was any valve in the area to switch off and avoid wastage, Anwar Hossain replied that there was one on the Mirpur road in Kalabagan but its location has been lost due to re-carpeting of the Mirpur Road over the years.
“Nobody knows where the valve is situated,” Hossain said.
Residents of Dolphin Golli in Kalabagan said hundreds of houses are out of water since Tuesday afternoon.
