to Jessore General Hospital as he fell sick after a clash with

the hospital.
A
policeman died just after a clash with Jamaat-Shibir men who unleashed
terror in Monirampur upazila of Jessore during the countrywide early
hartal hours on Thursday. The victim is identified as Zohurul Haque, 50, a constable attached to Monirumpur Police Station. Zohurul, hailing from Narail district, was the father of two sons and a daughter.
Earlier, Ali Azam, officer-in-charge of the police station, had told our Jessore correspondent that the constable was killed in a clash with Shibir activists.
Eight people including four policemen were also injured during the clash, reports our Jessore correspondent.
Police also rounded up four Shibir men from the spot.
"We were informed about an attack by Jamaat-Shibir men about a kilometre away from the police station around 5:30am," the OC said, taking a U-turn on his first statement 30 minutes ago centring the death of the policeman.
"I, accompanied by ten other constables including Zohurul rushed to the spot and fought a pitched battle with the unruly activists," the OC said.
Then more forces joined us to disperse the activists, he said.
"When the situation calmed down I walked back to the police station along with Zohurul where he complained of physical uneasiness," he said.
"We rushed him to Monirumpur Upazila Health Complex where the doctors referred him to Jessore General Hospital," the OC added.
He probably died on his way, he added.
Hasan Mahmud Habib, medical officer of the hospital, said the body bore injury mark on one of its cheeks.
The cause of his death will be ascertained only after the post mortem, he added.
Ali Azam had earlier said, the clash ensued around 6:30am when the law enforcers tried to resist the activists of Shibir, the student wing of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islam, from holding a procession at Gohata in the upazila.
Over 100 Shibir activists brought out the procession in the area, he added.
When police rushed there, the Shibir men blasted several cocktails and fired blank shots to create panic among the law enforcers, the OC added.
At one stage, the Shibir men started to hurl brick chips on the law enforcers, compelling the police to retaliate with blank shots.
The law enforcers also charged batons on them to bring the situation under control.
The eight people including the policemen got hurt by the brick chips hurled by the Shibir men.
Police picked up four Shibir men from the spot, he added.
