Md Enayet Uddin, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station of Gazipur, said a fertiliser-laden Rajshahi-bound truck turned turtle on Ulukhola bridge after hitting a road divider around 3:30am.
Eight passengers mostly day-labourers died on the spot and three sustained severe injuries when the fertiliser bags fell on them, a correspondent from Gazipur reports quoting the OC.
On information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the eight bodies from the scene.
Six of the deceased were identified as Shada Miah, Shahinur, Shahid, Wahidul, Babul and Ejahar Nabi.
Among the deceased all aged between 40 and 50, five were day-labourers while Ejahar was a rickshaw-puller of Chittagong.
The injured were rushed to Tongi Government Hospital in Gazipur and National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (Nitor) in the capital.
In Dhaka, Md Imon, 22, suffered severe head injuries when a truck hit his motorcycle on Badda Link Road around 1:00am.
Imon was declared dead when he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Quoting the family members, the OC said Imon, a resident of Merajnagar in Kadamtoli area, went out with his friends to visit Hatirjheel project area Sunday night.
