The
High Court on Sunday ordered the government to arrest Monir Uddin
within 48 hours for his alleged involvement in throwing acid on Sharmin
Akter Ankhi, a student of Eden College.The HC also ordered the government to produce Monir, the main accused in the case filed in this connection, before the court within the time.
In response to a petition, the court issued a rule upon the government to explain in two weeks why the law enforcers should not be directed to discharge their duties as per the Code of Criminal Procedure.
The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik and Justice Mahmudul Haque came up with the order and rule after hearing the petition filed by Advocate Manzill Murshid, on behalf of Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.
The home secretary, inspector general of police and commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police have been made respondents to the order and rule.
On January 15, Monir allegedly threw a bottle of acid on Ankhi's face and then stabbed her indiscriminately with a knife at a marriage registrar's office in the capital's Chankharpul and ran away.
Ankhi, is an honours final-year student of Eden College, is undergoing treatment at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
