The
High Court on Wednesday extended for more 48 hours to arrest Monir
Uddin and Masum for their alleged involvement in throwing acid on
Sharmin Akter Ankhi, a student of Eden College. The court also directed director general of Rapid Action Battalion and joint commissioner of Detective Branch of police to provide assistance to arrest the two accused.
The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik and Justice Mahmudul Haque passed the order, reports our court correspondent.
Md Abul Bashar, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Bangshal Police Station, told the court that police have been trying their best to arrest the two accused.
Earlier in the day, the HC bench summoned Abul Bashar, to explain whether they could arrest Monir and Masum.
The police officer also said that police has issued a letter to the authorities concerned to order law enforcers to remain alert on all the key ports so that the duo cannot leave the country.
On January 20, the bench directed the government to arrest Monir and Masum within 48 hours which ended Tuesday.
On January 15, Monir, 28, forcibly took Ankhi to a marriage registrar's office in the capital.
As she refused to marry him, Monir threw a bottle of acid on her face and then stabbed her indiscriminately with a knife.
Monir's friend Masum was also present at the scene. They went into hiding after the attack.
Ankhi's brother Mohiuddin filed a case against the two with Bangshal Police Station on the same day.
