Minister Sheikh Hasina said on Wednesday her government would start the
construction work of Padma bridge project with alternative arrangements
if the World Bank fails to clarify its stance on financing the project
within this month.The premier made the comment during a press briefing at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in the capital to update on her recent visit to Russia. The prime minister went to Russia on January 14 on a three-day official visit.
Hasina said Finance Minister AMA Muhith has already urged the global lender to make its position clear within January.
“If it [WB] doesn’t make its position clear within this month, we will start the construction work in the following month,” said the premier.
The PM also expressed her high hope to begin the construction work of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant by September-October this year.
Terming Russia as the true friend of Bangladesh, the premier said during her Moscow visit she urged Russia for quota-free access for Bangladeshi products to the Russian market.
Hasina said that Russian government had expressed its positive attitude to her every single call.
She said the relationship between Bangladesh and Russia will grow stronger and both the countries will be benefited in the long run.
Hasina said Russia is a member of BRICS (the grouping of the world's fastest-growing large economies comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and it recently obtained the membership of World Trade Organisation (WTO). So she urged the country to invest more in Bangladesh, she added.
Russia have assisted in different development activities in Bangladesh, she said adding that her recent tour to Russia will strengthen the relationship between the two countries.
Hasina informed that people from all walks of Russia including its President Vladimir Putin have talked to her about Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman during her visit.
Russia has assisted Bangladesh during its Liberation War, she added.
During her visit, Bangladesh and Russia signed three agreements and six memorandums of understanding (MoUs) on cooperation in different fields, including setting up of the much-awaited 1000 MW nuclear power plant at Rooppur in Pabna.
