50km tailback on Dhaka-Ctg highway

Obaidul apologises to people for gridlock

Communications Minister Obaidul Quader visits the traffic congestion on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Comilla during his trip to Chittagong from Dhaka Saturday noon.
Thousands of passengers have been suffering severely as they remain stuck in a 50-kilometre long tailback on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Comilla on Saturday.
The tailback which stretched from Daudkandi toll plaza to Comilla Cantonment area is a consequence of Friday's road accident, reports a Daudkandi correspondent.
On Friday a Dhaka-bound goods-laden truck from Chittagong turned turtle at Madhaiya in Chandina upazila of Comilla around 7:00am and since then, the tailback is continuing for nearly 30 hours till around 1:30pm Saturday when this report was filed.
The tailback is still prevailing on the highway as the drivers were seen driving their vehicles recklessly aiming to reach their destinations, said Anwar Hossain, a sergeant of Iliotganj Highway Police.
Meanwhile, Communications Minister Obaidul Quader visited the traffic congestion on the highway on his trip to Chittagong from Dhaka Saturday noon.
The minister was scheduled to go to Chittagong on air. But after hearing the news of severe tailback, he rescheduled his trip by road.
On his way, he addressed people at Daudkandi toll plaza auditorium around 12:30pm and apologised to people for their untold sufferings.
“I am very sorry to see the sufferings to the passengers specially the children, women and patients,” the minister said.

He also asked the people concerned to solve the problem as early as possible and to find out the reason behind the awful tailback.
Abul Hossain, 32, of Khagrachhari is on his way to Thakurgaon with his eight-member family including his wife and two daughters and mother-in-law.
He said they had to spend nearly 11 hours to reach Daudkandi from Comilla Cantonment area. The distance usually needs only an hour to travel, he added.
"We are suffering a lot due to the tailback as there were no toilet facilities and scarcity of enough drinking water and food,” he added.
Mazharul Islam, a covered van driver, had to take over five hours to travel only 9 kilometres from Daudkandi toll plaza to Chittagong.
