Rajshahi hartal progressing amid stray incidents

5 hurt, 37 detained in Rajshahi, Bogra

A policeman tries to douse the fire that the pro-hartal activists set to a police pick-up van at Binodpur in Rajshahi city during hartal hours.
The eight-hour hartal enforced by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is progressing with some stray incidents including arson and vandalism in Rajshahi division on Tuesday.
A police van partially damaged when pickets set fire to it in Rajshahi city while pro-hartal activists vandalised at least five vehicles in Bogra town.
Police detained 37 pro-hartal activists from the two districts in the morning.
Jamaat have been observing the hartal demanding immediate release of all detained leaders of the party including its assistant secretary general Mujibur Rahman.
RAJSHAHI
Islami Chhatra Shibir activists set the police van afire at Binodpur in Rajshahi city around 7:30am, reports our Rajshahhi correspondent quoting SM Moniruzzaman, commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police.
The commissioner said activists of Shibir, a pro-Jamaat body, blasted at least two cocktails in front of a police van.
When they set fire to the police van, police charged batons and fired teargas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the activists.
The pro-hartal activists also hurled brick chips on the law enforcers triggering a clash that left five people injured, the commissioner said.
The police van was slightly damaged as the police men put out the fire immediately.
The pro-hartal activists also torched tyres in Rajshahi College area of the city.
Police picked up 34 people from Binodpur and Rajshahi College area, the commissioner said.
All the educational institutions remain opened. Rickshaw and all motorised vehicles except private cars and bus have been plying the streets.
Police forces have been deployed at various points of the city to prevent any untoward incidents.
BOGRA
Pro-hartal activists vandalised five vehicles at Selimpur area near Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.
Police picked up three hartal supporters from the area, reports our Bogra correspondent quoting Syed Shaheed Alam, officer-in-charge of Bogra Sadar Police Station.
Two of the detainees are Abdus Salam and Abul Kalam.
No long distance bus left or entered the district following the hartal.
BACK GROUND
Jamaat announced the hartal through a press release on Monday.
In the press release, Jamaat demanded immediate release of Mujibur Rahman and other leaders who are detained for their alleged crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 Liberation War.
Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested Mujibur from Zero Point area in Khulna city on Saturday for his alleged involvement with the attack on police in Rajshahi during the BNP-led opposition's countrywide hartal on January 6.
The release claimed that Rab arrested Mujibur, also president of Shramik Kolyan Federation, without any charges against him and later implicated him in a “false” case.
Earlier, Jamaat observed half-day hartal in the division in last December protesting the arrest of the party's publicity secretary Tasnim Alam.
