Students padlock USTC buildings

Teachers, pro-VC confined for 6 hours

The BBA students of University of Science and Technology of Chittagong (USTC) padlocked university's academic and administrative buildings keeping its teachers including pro-vice chancellor inside for nearly six hours.
The students of Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) started the demonstrations around 8:00am to press home their demand for reinstating Associate Professor Surajit Sargabidya as the faculty dean, reports our correspondent from Chittagong quoting the university registrar.
Around 300 students took part in the demonstration confining the teachers and padlocking several academic buildings that housed BBA, English, Medicine, Pharmacy, Biochemistry and engineering departments.
The teachers of these departments, who entered the building in the morning for taking classes, could not come out as the students were continuing their demonstration till 1:30pm when this report was filed.
No class or examination was held since the morning following the demonstration.
Professor Shams-Ud-Doha, registrar of the university, told The Daily Star that Prof Surajit is very popular among the BBA students. So, they are demonstrating for his reinstatement even after the expiry of his tenure, he added.
Surajit's tenure as the dean of the BBA department expired in last year.
