At
least seven teachers of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur sustained
burn injuries when BCL men reportedly attacked them and vandalised a
loudspeaker splashing acid from its battery on them on the university
campus Thursday morning. Two of the injured -- Dr Tuhin Wadud, a lecturer of Bangla department; and Motiur Rahman, associate professor of management department -- were rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital
The injured teachers claimed that activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) made the attack, reports our Rangpur correspondent.
Dhanajit Ghosh Taposh, BCL president of Rangpur district unit, however denied the allegation saying that they could not take the responsibilities of the attack since there was no BCL unit at the university.
Witnesses said some miscreants attacked teachers and students, who were demonstrating demanding resignation of the vice chancellor, in the morning.
At one stage, the attackers vandalised the loudspeaker, which was set up by the demonstrating teachers and students in front of the administrative building around 10:00am.
As they hit the loudspeaker's battery, acid from it splashed on them, leaving seven teachers injured.
The teachers went on an indefinite strike from Sunday demanding immediate resignation of Vice-Chancellor Dr Muhammad Abdul Jalil Miah.
