“If the main opposition BNP considers itself as a people’s representative and servant, then it was its obligation to discharge its responsibilities by coming to parliament and exchanging views through participation in all constructive dialogues inside and outside the Jatiya Sangsad including the issue of constitutional amendment,” the president said.
He was addressing the opening sitting of the New Year session of the ninth parliament outlining successes of the Awami League-led government.
“It is true that the opposition party has failed to fulfill its constitutional and democratic obligations by refraining from participation in parliamentary proceedings during the past four years,” Zillur further said.
“Keeping alive political conflict and confrontation by clinging to any particular position or carrying out responsibilities restored by the people through adoption of a rigid stand on boycotting the parliament do not conform to democratic behaviour,” he added.
The president urged the opposition to return to parliament and discuss various issues to make the session effective.
The 16th session of the ninth parliament that began at 3:33pm Sunday and continued till 4:10pm has been adjourned until January 30.
