Jamaat-Shibir activists once again swooped on law enforcers in the capital, Chittagong, Rajshahi and Dinajpur on Monday. At least 56 people including 37 policemen were injured in the clashes.
A CNG driver who received bullet wounds in the head is undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
Police have so far rounded up more than 57 people.
Hayatuzzaman, officer-in-charge of Motijheel Police Station, also sustained injuries during the clash and undergoing treatment at Rajarbag police hospital.
The activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir hurled over 70 cocktails in different parts of the capital including Motijheel, Dainik Bangla intersection, in front of the Bangladesh Secretariat, Dhaka University premises and in Chittagong, Rajshahi and Dinajpur.
More than 104 vehicles were vandalised and three others including a police van torched in the capital while two police vans were damaged in Dinajpur.
Law enforcers had to fire at least 50 teargas canisters and rubber bullets in the capital to disperse the unruly Jamaat-Shibir activists, police said.
Transport movement from Dainik Bangla intersection to Jatiya Press Club remained suspended for one hour from 10:00am following the clashes, creating a huge traffic jam that spilled over into adjacent roads.
DHAKA
In the capital city, the Jamaat-Shibir men brought out two separate processions at Dainik Bangla intersection and Paltan around 10:00am demanding immediate release of their detained leaders including the war crimes suspects.
As law enforcers came to resist them, they hurled several cocktails on them, prompting the clashes.
The Jamaat-Shibir activists then divided into separate groups and spread over different areas including Motijheel, Dainik Bangla intersection, Paltan, Gulistan, stadium areas, in front of the Secretariat and Dhaka University premises and vandalised over 100 vehicles and torched three more including a police van, said Anwar Hossain, deputy commissioner of Motijheel Division.
During the clashes, more than 20 police men sustained injuries.
Of them, 17 police personnel, including the OC of Motijheel Police Station, were rushed to Rajarbag police hospital while three others were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said Moktar Hossain, a sub-inspector of the police station.
Inspector General of Police Hasan Mahmud Khandkar visited the injured in the Rajarbag hospital.
The Jamaat-Shibir men hurled over 50 cocktails during the clashes, he said.
Police had to hurl nearly 12 teargas shells and fire several blank shots to disperse the agitating Jamaat-Shibir activists, he added.
The law enforcers also charged batons to bring the situation under control.
Police picked up around 50 people in connection with the clash, the SI said.
The transport movement from Dainik Bangla intersection and Jatiya Press Club and Gulistan areas came to a halt for over one hour during the clash, the Motijheel Division DC added.
Five minutes after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina entered Bangladesh Secretariat to hold cabinet meeting, the Jamaat-Shibir men attacked police in front of secretariat around 10:15am.
Monir Hossain and Moinuddin, two sub inspectors and also members of the VIP protocol, said some 400 to 500 people wielding machetes, iron rods and bamboos reached the spot all on a sudden.
They attacked a traffic sergeant, Golam Sarwar, and beat him up indiscriminately.
Later, they also attacked and injured the other policemen, leaving 10 of them injured.
The group vandalised at least 30 vehicles parked outside the secretariat on Abdul Gani Road.
Police fired at least 30 teargas shells and rubber bullets to bring the situation under control, said Syed Nurul Islam, deputy commissioner of Ramna zone.
The activists also blasted several cocktails on the South Gate of the Bangladesh Secretariat when a cabinet meeting was going on inside it.
The cocktails coincidentally blasted beside the vehicle carrying Finance Minister AMA Muhith, who was going to the Secretariat to attend the cabinet meeting, and also vandalised a vehicle of his (Muhith) escort.
Delwar, a constable of Muhith's escort team, sustained injuries following the attack. He was rushed to Rajarbagh police hospital.
But no casualties were reporter during the incident.
The agitating party men also vandalised four to five vehicles in front of the Secretariat.
The Shibir activists blasted at least 11 cocktails at different points of Dhaka University in the capital during the span of five hours from 8:00am.
They blasted were exploded in front of the central library, Annex building, Kala Bhaban and Zohurul Haque Hall of the university.
Motijheel Division DC Anwar said they seized petrol from the possession of some of the detainees.
The attackers were carrying the petrol to torch more vehicles, the DC said.
CHITTAGONG
A CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver received bullet wound in the head and four policemen were injured critically in a clash between Jamaat-Shibir activists and law enforcers in the port city.
Nurul Huda, the bullet-hit driver, Sub-inspector Md Ataul, 3 constables Md Quader, Ahabul and Quashem were rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, SI Md Jahir of Bashkhali Police Station told The Daily Star.
The clash, erupted around 12:00pm as the Jamaat-Shibir activists tried to fasten a banner protesting the war crimes trial, was continuing at Chambol area, the SI said.
Meanwhile, two constables of Chittagong Kotwali Police Station -- Md Jamal and Masud Karim -- received minor injuries as Shibir activists hurled brick chips at a police van in the port city.
Anwar Hossain, a sub-inspector of Kotwali Police Station, told The Daily Star that a patrolling team of police saw a procession of nearly one hundred of Shibir men marching towards the BRTC area.
The ICS activists also hurled brick chips on a police van.
The two constables got hurt in their arms as the ICS activists hurled brick chips on their van, said the SI, who was also a member of the patrol team.
"As soon as we came out of the van, the Shibir-men went away through the narrow lanes of the city street,” Anwar said.
AKM Mohiuddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station, said none was arrested in this connection.
RAJSHAHI
The clash ensued in Rajshahi city when around 40 to 50 Shibir men brought out a brisk procession at Binodpur around 10:00am.
They hurled at least 10 cocktails targeting the police, ensuing the one-hour long clash from 9:30am, reports our Rajshahi correspondent quoting Shah Golam Mahmud, deputy commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (east zone).
The law enforcers lobbed several teargas canisters and rubber bullets to resist the processionists, he said.
Police picked up seven people from the nearby areas after the clash, he added.
DINAJPUR
Md Mamun, a sub-inspector of Dinajpur Kotwali Police Station, was injured when the Jamaat-Shibir men beat him indiscriminately in the morning.
The activists also vandalised two police vans during the attack, reports our Dinajpur correspondent quoting Md Abdul Kader Zilani, officer-in-charge of the police station.
The clash started when the Jamaat and Shibir activists brought out a procession from Nimtola intersection in the town around 10:10am demanding release of their leaders.
As the procession reached near Bhutibabu intersection, the Jamaat and Shibir activists attacked the police with bamboos and timbers after being obstructed by them, the OC said.
Mamun was rushed to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital.
