Muhammad Kamaruzzaman
War crimes suspect Jamaat leader Mohammad Kamaruzzaman on Wednesday filed a petition seeking retrial of his case. The detained Jamaat-e-Islami assistant secretary general is now facing seven charges for his alleged crimes against humanity committed during the country's Liberation War in 1971.
Tajul Islam, one of the Kamaruzzaman's councils, submitted the retrial petition to the registrar of the war crimes tribunal.
After the submission, he informed this to the media at a press briefing.
"This trial seems to be a biased one and so we submitted the petition for retrial," Tajul said during the briefing.
Now the deposition of the prosecution witnesses is going on at the International Crimes Tribunal-2 in the Kamaruzzaman case. The 16th witness is scheduled to give his deposition on January 03.
The flurry of retrial petitions began after an alleged Skype conversation between former ICT-1 chairman Justice Nizamul Huq and expatriate legal expert Ahmed Ziauddin was published by a Bangla daily in December last year.
On December 11, Nizamul stepped down citing personal reasons for his resignation.
