Protect garment sector from hartal, businesses tell govt

Apparel sector leaders on Tuesday urged the government to find out a way to save the country’s garment sector and the economy from the negative impacts of hartal (shutdown).
“Businessmen have become hostages. They want to run their business uninterruptedly,” Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), told reporters after a meeting with Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith.
“Politicians are doing politics. We should not advise them. We should find a solution for hartal,” the BGMEA president said.

Agreeing with the garment sector leaders, Muhith said Bangladesh’s economy does not afford shutdowns.
“We have to find out an alternative to the hartals,” he said while talking to reporters.
A solution could be found had Jamaat-e-Islami believed in politics, “But Jamaat only believes in ferocity.”
He encouraged businessmen to work for finding a solution for hartal.
Referring to different banks’ refusal to honour inland bills purchases (IBPs) of the garment exporters following the Hall-Mark loan scam, the garment sector leaders urged Muhith for taking steps to convince the banks to honour IBPs.
The banks did not release the IBPs worth over Tk 1,500 crore, which they had accepted before the scam came to light last year, Mohiuddin said.
The apparel sector leaders reiterated their demand of reducing bank loan interest rate, he said, adding that they also asked the minister for easing rules for bank loan rescheduling.
AKM Salim Osman, president of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association, and Jahangir Al Amin, president of Bangladesh Textile Mills Association, were among the leaders.
