Nine
activists of Jubo Dal and Jatiyabadi Chhatra Dal were sentenced to life
term imprisonment on Wednesday in a case filed for killing a former
lawmaker in Lalpur upazila of Natore.
Mamtaj Uddin, a former Awami League lawmaker from Natore, was stabbed to death in Lalpur upazila headquarters by criminals on June 6, 2003.
A speedy trial tribunal in Rajshahi on Wednesday also fined the convicts Tk 30,000 each, in default, to suffer one more year in jail, reports our Rajshahi correspondent.
The tribunal acquitted three accused from the murder charges as allegations brought against them was not proved.
The convicts are: Arif, Babu alias Babar, Faruk, Alam, Shamim, Aynal, Mithu, Aslam and Sujan.
Of them, Babu and Alam remained absconding while the others in Rajshahi jail.
Police submitted charge sheet against 12 accused in the case on January 21, 2004.
