18-party calls 36-hr hartal from Wednesday

DHAKA: Opposition BNP-led 18-party alliance has called 36-hour countrywide hartal from Wednesday demanding immediate release of leaders and activists of the party and protesting “genocide”.

Acting Secretary General of the party Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the announcement at a press conference at central party office at Nayapaltan in the city on Monday afternoon.

The spokesperson for the party alleged that Sunday’s comment of the BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia regarding the role of armed forces has been misrepresented in the print and electronic media.

He said, “The BNP, as a democratic party, not only dislikes military intervention in the country but also strongly opposes it.”

On Sunday, opposition leader in Parliament Khaleda Zia said the army would not play the role of a “silent viewer while people are getting killed” and that it would “play its role in due time”.

Fakhrul also accused the government of placing 151 opposition leaders and activists on remand and charges.

He alleged that the ruling Awami League leaders and activists attacked the opposition leaders and activists during last 36-hour countrywide hartal.
