Opposition may enforce hartal on April 2, 8, 9

Leaders of the BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance will meet Sunday evening to finalise next agitation programmes which may feature countrywide hartal (shutdown) on April 2, 8 and 9.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at Gulshan office of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at 8:30pm, Abdul Mobin, chairman of Islamic Party, a constituent of the alliance, told The Daily Star.
Finalising the shutdown tops the agenda of the meeting, he added.
Other agitation programmes under consideration include grand rally and blockades in the capital and siege to the Dhaka city, the sources added.

The meeting will also discuss about opposition alliance’s strategy how to react against recent killings in Chapainawabganj and Sirajganj.
Earlier on Thursday, BNP decided to enforce a shutdown on April 2 if the government does not release 148 opposition leaders, who were arrested during a raid at the party headquarters on March 11, by April 1.
If the alliance decides to call for hartal on April 8 and 9, it will set an ultimatum for releasing the opposition leaders before enforcing the shutdown, according to sources.
The law enforcers detained 157 leaders and activists of the BNP-led alliance during a raid on the BNP headquarters on March 11 after cocktails went off at a rally in front of the office.
Of the detained leaders, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, its vice chairman Altaf Hossain Chowdhury and Dhaka city unit convener Sadeque Hossain Khoka were released the next day.
Paltan police filed two cases against the 154 detained opposition leaders and activists the same day.
