Jatiya Party Chairman Hussein
Muhammad Ershad, accompanied by his party members, reached Bangabhaban
to pay his last respects around 2:30pm.
Earlier, his body was
driven to the official residence of the President after the remains
arrived at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after 12:00 noon.
A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight carried the body from Singapore where he died on Wednesday. He was 84.
Guarded
by a motorcade, a car wrapped in the national flag and decorated with
red and white flowers carried the coffin to Bangabhaban from the
airport.
The motorcade travelled through Airport Road, Mohakhali,
Bijoy Sarani, Farmgate, Banglamotor, Minto Road, Matsha Bhaban, High
Court, Abdul Gani Road and Bangabandhu Stadium to reach Bangabhaban at
1:04pm.
People stood on both sides of the road to get a quick
glimpse of their beloved leader. Many were seen carrying placards with
mourning messages and waving black flags.
At Bangabhaban, Zillur
Rahman’s body was placed on an elevated stage and a smart group of armed
forces personnel gave military salute in his honour.
The coffin was wrapped in a national flag.
At the airport, the Acting President, Prime Minister, her sister Sheikh Rehana and her Cabinet members paid respects.
Abdul Hamid was seen wiping his tears frequently.
Son Nazmul Hassan MP and two daughters were in the flight carrying the coffin from Singapore.
Ten
senior military officers of the rank of Major General or above drawn
from all the three forces carried the coffin on their shoulders from the
plane to a dais where Hamid, Hasina, ministers and other senior leaders
of the Awami League placed wreaths.
A group of armed forces accorded state honour to Rahman at the airport.
