Muhith asks Khaleda to propose for talks

Hours after the opposition BNP sought a formal proposal for dialogue from the government, Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith on Saturday asked opposition leader Khaleda Zia to come up with an offer of talks.

Muhith told a rally in Sunamganj that the government was ready to hold talks over the upcoming elections.
Earlier in the day, BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir sought a formal proposal for talks to end the current political deadlock.
Major political parties in Bangladesh have positioned themselves on opposite poles over who would oversee the next national elections after the 15-year-old caretaker government system was scrapped in 2011.
While the ruling Awami League had proposed unconditional talks, the BNP said they would not take part in any dialogue unless the caretaker government was reinstated.

Amid the lingering stand-off, various quarters have called for dialogue between the top leaders of the two main political parties.

National Human Rights Commission Chairman Mizanur Rahman went to the extent of saying that if needed, he would move to arrange talks between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Leader of the Opposition Khaleda Zia.

Muhith said he had urged Khaleda to put forward a dialogue proposal as he feared the BNP would turn down any such offer from the Awami League.
