HC rejects Osman’s anticipatory bail

The High Court on Sunday denied the anticipatory bail petition of Narayanganj Awami League leader Shamim Osman in the murder case of Tanvir Mohammad Twaki.
Advocate Abdul Baset Majumder filed the anticipatory bail petition for Shamim Osman, his son Ayan Osman and three others earlier in the morning.

The Vocational bench of Justices Gobinda Chandra Tagore and Mohammad Badruzzaman turned down the petition after hearing.

The court said it saw no reason to provide anticipatory bail because police had not talked of intentions to arrest Shamim Osman in the case.

Twaki's body was recovered from a canal of Shitalakkhya river in Narayanganj’s Charargop area on Mar 8, two days after he went missing. Twaki was son of Rafiur Rabbi – a cultural activist and organiser of Narayanganj’s Ganajagaran Mancha unit.

Rabbi filed a murder case, but did not specify any suspects in the case. However, he wrote a ‘complaint’ to police Superintendent where he mentioned seven suspects including Shamim Osman and Ayan Osman.

Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy blamed Shamim Osman for the killing in a local Mar 15 rally.

Police nabbed one Rifat Bin Osman – mentioned in Rabbi’s complaint – and took him into custody for questioning.

Juba League leader Jahirul Islam Parvez, Narayanganj Chhatra League Vice President Rajib Das, General Secretary Mizanur Rahman also filed anticipatory bail petitions at High Court in the morning.

On Sunday, Shamim Osman told a news conference that he was abroad when Twaki was killed, and therefore allegations of his involvement in the murder were baseless.

He threatened to take legal action if the complaint was not withdrawn within 48 hours.
