Indo-Bangla maritime dispute verdict expected by June 2014

The verdict in the Indo-Bangla maritime dispute might come by June next year, according to officials of the foreign ministry.
“Bangladesh has already made their formal opinion to International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea about holding hearing on the dispute,” Rear Admiral (retd) Md Khurshed Alam, head of Maritime Affairs Unit of the ministry, told The Daily Star on Tuesday.
He was talking to journalists after emerging from a seminar titled ‘Maritime Piracy and Human Response’ organised by Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS) at its Auditorium in the capital.

India will make its formal opinion to the court about the hearing in July this year, he added.
Addressing the seminar, Khurshed Alam said no incident of piracy took place in Bangladesh territory.
But there were some incidents of robbery which some newspapers reported as incidents of piracy, he said, adding that it tarnished the image of the country.
Talking about seven Bangladeshi crew who were abducted by Somali pirates last year, the secretary said the government was trying to free them.
