Defending
the detention of many top BNP leaders from their party headquarters,
Home Minister MK Alamgir on Monday said police can arrest any
‘criminals’ any time from any place of the country.
In a live programme at Ekattar Television in the evening, the home minister said: “If police would not have arrested them, the violence could escalate further.”
Police in a raid in the evening picked up many top BNP leaders including its acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir from their office in Nayapaltan in the capital.
The home minister however ruled out any probability of declaring a state of emergency in the country following the recent political turmoil.
Regarding Shahbagh protests, Alamgir said the government extended its support to the Gonojagoron Mancha as the youths believe in the spirit of the Liberation War.
