The government is considering taking action against Jamaat-e-Islami under Anti-Terrorism Act 1998, Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu said on Sunday.
“Examining their recent activities, it has become crystal clear that the Jamaat-Shibir gradually turned into a party of terrorists and militants,” he said at a press briefing at Press Information Department at the Secretariat.
“The existing anti-terrorism act was formed on the basis of several laws which have been implemented in other countries to curb terrorism,” the minister said.
Inu said that two national dailies–Amar Desh and Naya Diganta–have been launching propaganda on the ongoing war crimes trial and on the government stance on Islam.
The minister told newsmen that the Jamaat-Shibir men recently unleashed violence in 15 districts across the country.
The government has been investigating whether the violence was caused following the failure of local administration and the law enforcers, he added.
Earlier on February 17, Law Minister Shafique Ahmed said that the government is considering banning the politics of Jamaat.
