Khaleda’s Pranab meet cancellation beyond democratic norms: Dipu

Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni on Tuesday castigated opposition leader Khaleda Zia for the cancellation of her scheduled meeting with visiting Indian President Pranab Mukherjee and  termed it a “departure” from democratic norms.“He (Pranab) is very well-respected person of this region…it’s very unfortunate (gesture) from her party, her side that the meeting was called off. I can only say it’s very unfortunate, it shouldn’t have happened,” she told a crowded press conference.

Asked whether it was breach of democratic norms she said, “Obviously, it’s a departure from that…it really shows that not all political parties similarly democratic in their attitude.”
The press conference was arranged at the city’s Ruposhi Bangla Hotel for local and Indian journalists covering the visiting Indian President’s programmes.
Dipu said Khaleda sought appointment and she was given the appointment and it was expected that she would call on the Indian President.
The foreign minister also said through this departure the difference between two major political parties is demonstrated, and it shows that not all political parties practice democratic norms equally.
Describing Bangladesh a country having a good history of hospitality, Dipu Moni said it is also a departure from that.
She, however, said the relationship between the two countries is solid enough that is not going to suffer from this departure.
Responding to a question, Dipu Moni said the appointment was made through her party and the Indian High Commission in Dhaka.
Khaleda Zia, who was to meet the Indian President on Monday, cancelled the meeting citing security concerns amid a shutdown enforced by BNP’s key ally Jamaat-e-Islami.
Asked whether Bangladesh has got any clear message from the Indian President on pending issues, Dipu Moni said, “Definitely, he very strongly conveyed the message that India is fully committed to keeping its commitment.”
He (Pranab) has said it in public on so many occasions over the last two days and it is very clear, Dipu Moini asserted.
Asked how the Indian government will pass the LBA in Parliament facing opposition from BJP, the foreign Minister said, “I’m not in a position to talk about the internal politics of India.”
Since the commitment came from the highest political level and the highest office of the State it is hoped that it will be done very soon, she said.
Asked whether the government is using Shahbagh movement politically, she said people from all walks of life joined it and the government is completely aligned with their aspirations. “It’s a message to the entire world how a peaceful movement can be run. There’s no question of using it politically.”
Dipu Moni said the government sees similarities between the attacks of present time and what they did in 1971. “They’re damaging infrastructures, killing people and police, uprooting rail tracks and attacking minorities.”
“They only know one method and that is violence and it reminds us the method used in 1971,” she said.
About the possibility of banning Jamaat politics, she said there is a demand everywhere to ban Jamaat. “The government is considering it and the Election Commission has also role in this regard.”
Responding to a question, the Foreign Minister said LBA and Teesta deal were not part of the government election pledges.
On dialogue with BNP, she said the government is ready to hold talks on election issues and parliament is the best place for discussions.
“But the people of Bangladesh have rejected the idea of caretaker government system,” she added.
Dipu Moni hoped that the next polls will be held freely and transparently with the participation of all political parties.
On misreporting by Alzazeera, she said she hoped that the media outlet like Alzazeera will correct its news as there was no army deployment in the country.
