The
Jamaat-e-Islami called a dawn-to-dusk shutdown in Chittagong division
for Monday protesting the death of an Islami Chhatra Shibir activists
during a police raid at the house of former Jamaat lawmaker on March 13.
Mainul Hossain Munna, 26, a nephew of former Jamaat lawmaker Shahjahan Chowdhury, who sustained injuries during the raid, died at Chittagong Medical College Hospital around 11:00pm Friday, reports our Chittagong correspondent.
ANM Shamsul Islam, lawmaker of Jamaat of Satkania constituency, announced the hartal around 3:35pm Saturday while attending the namaz-e-janaza of Mainul.
Failing to nab Shahjahan, the law enforcers pushed Mainul off the rooftop of the house on March 13, Shahjahan claimed.
Police raided the house of Shahjahan on the night of March 13 to arrest the Jamaat leader on charges of creating anarchy in Satkania upazila on February 28, said Md Iltutmish, additional superintendent of police (ASP) of Chittagong South zone.
Anticipating detention, Mainul ran towards the rooftop of the four storey building and fell down, the ASP said.
He was rushed to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries Friday night, Iltutmish added.
On February 28, Jamaat-Shibir men vandalised at least 60 vehicles on Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar highway in Satkania upazila soon after Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee was sentenced to death for his wartime offences.
Several cocktails were also blasted in front of Chittagong College during the incident.
