Our Moulvibazar correspondent reported that the engine and six bogies of “Upobon”, a Sylhet-bound train from Dhaka, derailed at Boranshal around 3:30am, said Mujibur Rahman, assistant engineer of local railway station.
The derail occurred after miscreants removed several slippers from the tracks sometimes on Monday night.
A relief train from Sylhet rushed to the spot and conducted the salvage operation, Md Alamgir, officer-in-charge of Sylhet Government Railway Police Station, told The Daily Star.
Police arrested three Shibir and two BNP activists at Kulaura Dakkhin Bazar at noon suspecting their involvement with removing slippers from the tracks, said Dilip Kumar Das, OC (investigation) of Kulaura Police Station.
The arrestees are Shibir men Abul Kashem Azad, Redwanul Haque and Abdul Kashem and BNP activists Alamgir and Abdul Matlab.
Meanwhile, a four-member body was formed to investigate into the matter.
The probe committee was asked to submit a report within three days.
