1 held over Twaki killing, remand sought

Police on Wednesday moved the court praying for 10-day remand of a youth ‘arrested’ in connection with the killing of Narayanganj student Tanvir Muhammad Twaki.
Rifaat, 22, was nabbed in Kalirbazar area and shown arrested in the murder case, Officer in Charge of Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station SM Manjur Kader said.
Twaki, son of Narayanganj Sangskritik Jote leader Rafiur Rabbi, went missing on Mar 6. The body of the 17-year-old A-Level student of ABC International School was recovered from the bank of the Shitalakkhya River two days later.

Rabbi had filed a case over his son’s death without naming anyone.

On Mar 18, Rabbi gave the police a list of people who he believed were behind his son’s killing.

It included local Awami League leader Shamim Osman, his son Ayon Osman, Ayon’s two associates Saleh Rahman Simanta and Rifat, district Jubo League Publicity and Publication Secretary Zahirul Islam Parvez alias Kangaroo Parvez, district Chhatra League Vice President Rajib Das and General Secretary Mizanur Rahman Sujon.

A police official, who preferred anonymity, told bdnews24.com the law enforcers raided various places based on the information provided by Rifaat. “He (Rifaat) has been shown arrested based on the information obtained during those raids,” he said.

The detainee, a resident of Kalirbazar, is the son of Osman Gani.

At a rally on Mar 15, Narayanganj City Corporation Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy and Twaki’s father had accused Shamim Osman of the killing.

Osman, who was defeated in the mayoral polls, however, denied the allegation.
