Ahmed Ziauddin.
The
International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Sunday extended time by 10 weeks for
Ahmed Ziauddin, a Bangladeshi legal expert in Belgium, to reply to a
show-cause notice it had issued earlier. The tribunal issued the show-cause notice to Ziauddin to explain why legal proceeding would not be initiated against him for “obstructing fair process” of war crimes cases pending with it.
The three-member tribunal led by Justice Obaidul Hassan fixed the new date following a time petition send by Ziauddin to the registrar office of the tribunal through the Bangladesh Mission in Belgium.
The tribunal also fixed April 30 for further order on the issue.
On January 3, the tribunal issued the show-cause notice to Ziauddin after the Skype hacking had came to light.
It issued the notice after rejecting a retrial petition of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman which was filed based on the alleged Skype conversation between Ziauddin and former Tribunal-1 chairman Justice Md Nizamul Huq.
A Bangla daily published the alleged conversation transcript in December.
Against the backdrop of the situation, the former ICT-1 chairmen stepped down citing personal reasons on December 11.
A total of five Jamaat leaders including Kamaruzzaman filed retrial petitions following leaks of the alleged conversation.
In the notice, the tribunal asked Ziauddin to submit his explanation through the Bangladesh Mission in Belgium within 30 days from the date of receiving a copy of the order.
The tribunal also asked Ziauddin why proceeding under section 11 (4) of International Crimes (Tribunals) Act, 1973, would not be initiated for his “fallacious, offensive and unfounded remark involving the judges of ICT-2 made during their alleged conversations.”
