Jamaat has no right to do politics: Shafique

Law Minister Shafique Ahmed
Law Minister Shafique Ahmed on Saturday said Jamaat-e-Islami has no right to do politics in Bangladesh as the party is involved with killing people and damaging public properties.
"Jamaat is demeaning Islam by doing such activities," the minister said.
He was talking to reporters after attending the annual general meeting of Bangladesh Registration Service Association at the Institute of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh.

Islam is a religion of peace which does not allow activities like attack, killing and damage, but Jamaat is involved with such activities in the name of Islam, Shafique said.
Replying to a question, the law minister said a writ petition challenging the legality of Jamaat's registration is now remains pending with the High Court.
If the writ petition is disposed of, a directive on Jamaat's politics may come from the HC and then a decision can be taken on the ban of the activities of Jamaat, he added.
Shafique hoped that the HC would hear the writ petition and dispose it of within a very short time.
Bangladesh Tariqat Federation filed the writ petition on January 25 in 2009 challenging legality of the Election Commission's decision that registered Jamaat as a political party on November 4 in 2008.
Following the writ petition, the HC on January 27 in 2009 issued a rule upon the EC and the Jamaat ameer and the secretary general to explain why the registration of Jamaat should not be cancelled.
The petition is now pending with the HC and none of the petitioner or respondents to the rule have taken initiative for its hearing.
