Pro-hartal

Sunday morning.
The
daylong hartal enforced by eight so-called Islamist parties is
progressing amid some stray incidents in different districts on Sunday.Meanwhile, Barisal district has been kept out of the purview of today’s hartal due to a three-day yearly mahfil (a religious gathering) of Charmonai Peer that began on Saturday.
Two tempos were torched in Chittagong while 26 people were detained in Bogra, Natore, Chandpur, Moulvibazar and Meherpur during the hartal hours.
The incidents of chase and counter-chase were reported from Rajshahi, Bogra, Chandpur and Chittagong.
The Islamist parties enforced today's hartal protesting what they said attacks on their Friday’s demonstrations, and demanding punishment to ‘atheist’ bloggers.
CHITTAGONG
Pickets torched two tempos at Hazari Lane and Kapashgola in the city, reports our Chittagong correspondent quoting Mahiuddin Selim, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station.
Pro-hartal activists put barricade on the railway tracks in Hathajari upazila and intercepted a mail train heading for city around 9:00am, said Liakat Ali, officer-in-charge of Hathajari Police Station.
Police freed the railway tracks in 10 minutes, the OC said.
Hartal supporters under the banner of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh brought out a procession in Hathajari upazila headquarters around 9:00am, he added.
Vehicular movement was normal on the city streets while and shopping malls and business establishments were opened, the OC added.
Besides, demonstrators brought out a procession from Gonojagoron Mancha near press club and paraded through DC Hill and Andarkilla areas around 11:30am, chanting anti-hartal slogans and demanding capital punishment to all 1971 war criminals.
BOGRA
Chases and counter chases took place between law enforcers and pro-hartal activists in Khandar, Godarpara and Arulia area around 7:30am, reports our Bogra correspondent, quoting Shahid Alam, officer-in-charge of Bogra Sadar Police Station.
Police fired 21 rubber bullets and teargas shells to disperse the pickets when they tried to blockade roads in the areas and hurled brick chips at police, the OC said.
Police rounded up at least 14 pickets from different areas in the district on charge of picketing.
MOULVIBAZAR
Police picked up Shibir president of Moulvibazar Government College unit Abdul Karim in Court Road area for picketing during the hartal.
RAJSHAHI
The hartal supporters blocked roads in city bypass, Shabagan and Kharkhari areas of the city by setting fire to tyres for an hour since 8:00am.
A chase and counter-chase was taken place between pickets and law enforcers on City Bypass road at 8:00am but no injury was reported.
SYLHET
Hartal is progressing peacefully in Sylhet where the number of transports on the city streets is less than the last few hartals. Educational institutions remained closed.

NATORE
Two activists of Shibir, a pro-Jamaat organisation, were detained in Boraigram upazila while trying to create anarchy in the district.
CHANDPUR
Bangladesh Chhatra League burnt copies of Bangla daily Amar Desh at Shapath Chattar in the town around 9:00am.
A chase and counter-chase took place between pro-hartal activists and police at Puranbazar in the town around 7:00am, leaving three people injured.
Police picked up five people from different parts of the district for picketing, Amir Zafar, superintendent of Chandpur police.
Some launch left the terminal and train service remain almost normal.
MEHERPUR
Police detained four Jamaat men in the district town and Gangni upazila early Sunday suspecting that they might carry subversive activities, reports our Kushtia correspondent quoting Azizzul Haq, OC of Meherpur Sadar Police Station.
Our Pabna, Chapainawabganj and Rangpur correspondents report, no long-distant bus left or entered the districts following the hartal.
School and colleges remain opened defying the hartal but presence of students is thin.
