Like other days, tens of thousands of people converged on the capital’s Shahbagh intersection and continued their sit-in as enthusiastically as before for the seventh straight day.
People from all walks of life irrespective of age, sex and class have thronged wholeheartedly to express solidarity with the protesters at the venue, which has come to be known as “Projonmo Chottor”.
The demonstrators under the banner of ‘Bloggers and Online Activist Network’ started the protest on February 5, hours after Jamaat assistant secretary general Abdul Quader Mollah was given life imprisonment in a war crimes case.
Meanwhile, police detained a person who distributed leaflets among the people demonstrating at Shahbagh demanding death penalty for all war criminals.
The leaflets seek public opinion about the two main political parties that what it said could not establish people’s rights.
Though the ‘Bloggers and Online Activist Network’ started the demonstration, soon it transformed into a people’s movement.
Like the previous day, students from different colleges and universities carrying banners, placards, and national flags have joined today’s programme.
As time passes by, thousands of vigorous youths driven by the spirit of the 71 joined the venue.
They were seen chanting various slogans demanding capital punishment for all war criminals including Mollah.
The protesters on Sunday submitted a six-point charter to the Speaker, demanding death penalty for all war criminals including Mollah, and revocation of the state’s power to grant them amnesty.
The other demands include an amendment to the International Crimes Tribunal Act, allowing appeals against inadequate punishment and disposal of appeals from both the defence and the prosecution within three months of their filing.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the same day thanked the youths for raising voice against the 1971 war criminals.
Earlier on Sunday, the members of Bangladesh National Cricket Team joined the protest and expressed their solidarity.
All the team members of Duronto Rajshahi, a franchise of Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), while Khulna Royal Bengals skipper Shahriar Nafees joined the demonstrators at the Shahbagh intersection on Saturday and Sunday.
The organiser held a grand rally at Shahbagh intersection on Friday where tens of thousands thronged and called for the death penalty of all war criminals of the Liberation War.
