Over 23,000 sued over Friday mayhem

 
Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its likeminded Islamist organisations vandalise the Gonojagoron Mancha, set up to demand death penalty to war criminals, in front of Chittagong Press Club on Friday.
Police filed 16 cases against over 23,000 people including the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies in connection with Friday's violence in Dhaka and three other districts.
Eleven cases were filed in Dhaka, two each in Chittagong and Chandpur and one in Bogra on charges of arson and vandalism and attacking police and preventing them from discharging their duties.

CAPITAL
At least 4,000 people were sued in 11 cases filed between Friday midnight to 9:00am Saturday.
Of the total, four cases were filed each in Shahbagh and Paltan police stations and one each in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Wari and Ramna police stations, said Gazi Rabiul Islam, assistant commissioner (Media and Community Service) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
The plaintiffs mentioned the names of 58 accused in the 11 cases, the AC said.
They have been made accused of attacking police, vandalising and setting fire to their vehicles and creating panic among the people by using explosive substances.
CHITTAGONG
Kotwali police filed two separate cases against 3,500 people by mentioning the names of 25 activists of Jamaat, Shibir and other Islamist organisations early Saturday, said Abdullah Hel Baki, deputy commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (South).
A few thousand supporters of radical Islamist organisations vandalised structures and the Gonojagoron Mancha site in front of the press club on Jamal Khan Road during Friday's protest against Shahbagh movement.
At least four policemen were injured, one with bullet, in the clash with the activists.
CHANDPUR
On Saturday, two cases were filed against 1,200 leaders and activists of Jamaat, Shibir and its likeminded Islamist organisations, and BNP on charge of demeaning national flag, vandalising Gonojagoron Mancha and attacking police.
Mahbubur Rahman Mollah, a sub-inspector of Chandpur Model Police Station, filed the two cases with the police station.
Mahbub Morshed, officer-in-charge of Chandpur Model Police Station, on Saturday said activists of Hefazat-e-Islami Bangladesh vandalised the Gonojagoron Mancha and demeaned national flag and a back flag at Shapath Chattar in the town around 3:00pm Friday.
Several chases and counter-chases took place between Jamaat-Shibir men and police, the OC said adding that police fired 178 gunshots and 47 teargas canisters to bring the situation under control.
Eight policemen were injured during Friday's incident.
Police detained at least 48 BNP leaders and activists in separate raids in different areas of the town till Saturday morning.
Khalilur Rahman Gazi, BNP secretary general of Chandpur Sadar upazila unit, is among the detainees.
BOGRA
Police sued at least 15,000 people, naming 36 activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its likeminded Islamist organisations, on charge of vandalising and torching Gonojagoron Mancha and preventing police from discharging their duties.
Abdur Razzak, a sub-inspector of Bogra Sadar Police Station, filed the case around 11:00pm Friday.
