All the victims are from Harinala and Naogaon villages of Gazipur municipality area, reports our Cox’s Bazar correspondent quoting Mohammad Ruhul Amin, deputy commissioner of Cox’s Bazar.
Of the deceased, 12 are males, five females and a child, reports our Chittagong correspondent quoting Khaleduzzaman, assistant superintendent of police of Cox’s Bazar (Sadar Circle).
Describing the incident, Ranzit Kumar Barua, officer-in-charge of Chakoria Police Station, told The Daily Star that the police suspected that the driver of the bus failed to notice the speed breaker when he drove into Matamuhuri bridge as the route was new to him.
As the speedy bus hit the speed breaker, the driver lost control and the bus plunged on to the river bank crushing through the safety railing of the bridge around 5:00am, OC said.
Ironically the ill-fated bus belonged to ‘Nirapad Paribahan’, meaning “safe transportation”. It had 46 excursionists on board coming from Gazipur on Saturday for a picnic. On its way the picnickers visited a shrine in Fatikchhari upazila of Chittagong, the OC said.
Around 2:00am early Monday, the driver of the bus set off for Cox’s Bazar and the accident occurred nearly three hours after they had started for the beach city, the OC added.
Police recovered the bodies and sent those to Chakoria Upazila Health Complex.
The injured were also rushed to the health complex.
Later, they were shifted to different hospitals and clinics including Chittagong Medical College and Hospital.
Meanwhile, the Cox’s Bazar DC and Mohammad Azad Miah, superintendent of police of the district, visited the spot.
