men block Chapainawabganj-Rajshahi highway by setting fire to tyres at
Rajarampur during the daylong hartal in Rajshahi division on Wednesday.
The dawn-to-dusk hartal sponsored by Jamaat-e-Islami is progressing in a relaxed way in Rajshahi division on Wednesday.However, the scheduled examination of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) is going on in the division despite the hartal, said Tanvirul Alam, chairman of Rajshahi Education Board.
They took the decision after a discussion with the education ministry to comply with the Shahbagh protesters' call to boycott the Jamaat-enforced hartal, the education board chairman added.
Jamaat called the hartal in all the eight districts of the division protesting Tuesday’s arrest of its Rajshahi city ameer Ataur Rahman.
The hartal is progressing in Bogra, Natore, Naogaon, Joypurhat and Sirajganj without any untoward incident.
Rajshahi city dwellers apparently rejected the hartal as the activities of normal life are going on without any major interruption.
Pickets only vandalised two trucks in Kharkhari Bazar around 8:00am and set fire to tyres in Debishingpara and Binodpur areas of the city, reports our Rajshahi correspondent.
All educational institutions remained opened, though the presence of students was thin.
The shop owners also kept the shutters of their business establishments open.
A good number of minibuses and cars and a large number of CNG-run three-wheelers were seen plying the city streets. Rickshaws were also found dominating the thoroughfares.
No long-distance buses entered or set off for other district since the morning, but the train service remains normal.
Addition law enforcing members have been deployed in all the key points of the city, said SM Muniruzzaman, commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police.
In Pabna, Jamaat-Shibir men vandalised at least seven shops including a sweetmeat shop of district Awami League Joint Secretary Abu Ishaq Shamim on Abdul Hamid and Haji Mohammad roads in the town between 10:00am to 10:30am.
Witnesses said the activists came in procession chanting slogans and vandalised the shops.
They also vandalised 10 auto-rickshaws and battery-run three-wheelers on the roads, reports our Pabna correspondent.
The pro-hartal activists blocked Dasuria-Mirkamari road in Ishwardi upazila and Jalalpur-Pushpapara in Sadar upazila since the hartal began at 6:00am.
Most of the schools and colleges remain opened but all types of vehicles except rickshaws and auto-rickshaws are off the roads.
Our Chapainawabganj correspondent reports, the activists of Jamaat and Shibir staged demonstration by torching tyres on Chapainawabganj-Rajshahi highway at Upar Rajarampur and Swarupnagar in the town.
They brought out processions at different places in the town.
