leader Mufti Abdul Hannan had said that several top BNP leaders
including the party Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman were involved
with the August 21 grenade attack cases, a witness said on Sunday.AHM
Hahibur Rahman Bhuiyan, a former additional chief metropolitan
magistrate, said this while giving his deposition before a Dhaka court
as the 67th witness of the grenade attack cases. He is the magistrate who recorded the statement of the Harkat-ul Jihad (Huji) leader Mufti Mohammad Abdul Hannan, the prime accused in the case, on April 2, 2011.
Judge Shahed Nuruddin of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 recorded Habibur's statement for half an hour on Sunday.
Later, Barrister Fakhrul Islam, a counsel for Mufti Hannan, cross-examined him.
The defence will again cross-examine Habibur on Monday as the court adjourned the trial proceedings for today.
The August 21, 2004 grenade attack on an Awami League rally killed Ivy Rahman, wife of President Zillur Rahman, along with 23 others and wounded over 300 people.
The then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina, now prime minister, narrowly escaped death and suffered ear injury in the grenade blasts.
