Sedition case against Khaleda dismissed

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia
A Dhaka court summarily dismissed a sedition case on Thursday around five hours after it was filed against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on charge of writing an article against Bangladesh government.
Washington Times published the article of the former premier on January 30.
Advocate Moshiur Malek, president of Bangabandhu Foundation, filed the case with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka around 10:30am.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saifur Rahman dismissed the case around 3:15pm saying that the complainant was not a government official or empowered by the government or did not seek any prior sanction from the Home Ministry for filing the case.
According to the provision, if any person files a sedition case against another person, the complainant must be a government official or empowered by the government or must seek prior sanction from the Home Ministry.
Moshiur Malek, in his complaint, said Khaleda Zia had earlier written an article in Washington Times where she commented against Bangladesh government, which is similar to seditious offence.
In his complaint, he also appealed to the court to arrest Khaleda Zia and place her on remand to investigate the reason behind her writing against the government.
