Peaceful hartal underway in Manikganj

The daylong hartal enforced by eight so-called Islamist parties is progressing peacefully in Manikganj on Monday.
The Islamist parties called the hartal protesting killing of 'its activists' during a clash with police on Sunday in the district.
Four people were killed and at least 50 injured as pro-hartal activists clashed with police in Singair upazila of Manikganj during the countrywide hartal.

No pickets were seen taking part in any picketing during Monday's hartal in the district, reports our Manikganj correspondent quoting Mohammad Ali Mia, superintendent of police (SP) in Manikganj.
No untoward incident was reported till 11:00am when this report was filed as additional law enforcers were deployed at all the key points in the district, the SP said.
Meanwhile, local Awami League brought out an anti-hartal procession in Gobindol area of Singair upazila around 7:00am.
Later around 7:30am, leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, student wing of main opposition BNP, brought out a procession and held a rally in Khanpar area of the town in support of the hartal.
Most of the business institutions and roadside shops remained closed.
No long-distance bus left or entered the district in the morning.
However, local buses, auto-rickshaws and rickshaws were seen plying the roads defying the hartal since the morning.
