Islam, the chairman of Hall-Mark Group, was sent to jail hours after
she had surrendered before a Dhaka court on Tuesday in connection with
11 corruption cases.Metropolitan Magistrate Joinab Begum rejected her bail petition around 2:15pm and sent her to jail three and half hours after she had surrendered before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka.
Wife of the company's managing director Tanvir Mahmud, Jasmine surrendered before the court around 10:30am following a trial court order.
Judge Mohammad Zahirul Haque of the Senior Special Judges' Court in Dhaka on Sunday asked her to surrender before the CMM court in three days.
The High Court on Monday asked law enforcers to arrest Jasmine had she not surrender before the CMM court within two days as per a trial court order.
The HC also directed the government not to let Jasmine leave the country.
The HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik and Justice Mahmudul Hoque also summoned Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) public prosecutor Mosharraf Hossain Kazal to appear before it on February 20 for his explanation as to whether his office opposed the bail of Jasmine in the lower court.
Jasmine was granted bail on February 7 by the court of Judge Zahirul Haque on condition that she and her company would repay Tk 2,600 crore, which her company has swindled, to Sonali Bank.
The court however cancelled Jasmine's bail in the 11 corruption cases filed by the ACC following an HC order on February 17.
According to a Bangladesh Bank investigation, Hall-Mark in collaboration with some bank officials swindled out more than Tk 2,600 crore from the Ruposhi Bangla branch of Sonali Bank using forged document.
Jasmine was shown arrested on November 6, 2012 in six of the 11 corruption cases filed by the ACC in connection with a loan scam.
On October 4, 2012, the ACC filed 11 cases against 27 top officials of Sonali Bank and the Hall-Mark Group for the loan scam.
