"The verdict did not reflect people's expectations," Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif told reporters after a meeting of the 14- party at AL president's political office in Dhanmondi on Tuesday.
He was giving reaction on behalf of his party after the International Crimes Tribunal-2 sentenced Mollah to life term imprisonment for his crimes against humanity during the country's Liberation War in 1971.
"We had expected capital punishment in the crime against humanity case, but it did not happen," he said.
Hanif expressed his hope that the death penalty would be pronounced by the appeal court.
Meanwhile, State Minister for Law Qamrul Islam expressed his disappointment and dissatisfaction over the verdict.
"The verdict could not fulfill the desire of the people of the country," he said while giving his reaction over the International Crimes Tribunal's verdict against Mollah.
He said, “The people had desired something else about Mollah”.
While talking to reporters at Secretariat, Law Minister Shafique Ahmed said the prosecution can appeal with the Supreme Court against the verdict if they think so after examining the judgement.
He said both the prosecution and defence have right to move appeal before the SC against the verdict.
The law minister also said the government does not consider the verdict of the tribunal from any political aspect as the courts are functioning independently.
